Fred Hutch study finds new life for ‘ineffective’ drugs

A study from the TRACER team shows how testing drugs on 3D tumor slices instead of 2D cell cultures, can more accurately predict how cancers will respond to treatment. By preserving the tumor’s natural structure and microenvironment, this method can reveal hidden vulnerabilities that can be targeted even by drugs previously dismissed in standard lab tests. It’s especially promising for rare cancers, where treatment options, preclinical models and clinical trial opportunities are limited.
