Fred Hutch study dramatically expands therapeutic range of approved kinase drugs

Existing cancer drugs may work against many more diseases than once thought

A Fred Hutch team led by Taran Gujral, PhD, TRACER’s executive director, has shown that FDA‑approved kinase inhibitors may work against many more cancers and other diseases than they’re currently cleared to treat. By testing hundreds of mutant kinase enzymes, researchers found that existing drugs can block more than twice the number of cancer‑driving mutations previously recognized — a shift Gujral says could offer “a powerful head start” amid the challenges of developing new drugs for rare cancers. The study, published in Nature Biotechnology, also introduces KIRhub, a free tool from Gujral’s lab that helps researchers quickly look up which drugs might work against specific mutations.
